To continue our 2020-2021 European tour, we had a joint meetup with WIMLDS Poznań in May 2021.

The Paris chapter co-founder Caroline Chavier started the event, presenting WiMLDS Paris and sharing three data science and AI related films and books she had enjoyed:

👉 Coded bias, a documentary about a MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
👉 The Mitchells vs The Machines, a family comedy movie where an…

To continue our 2021 European tour, in April we had another joint meetup, this time with WIMLDS Bucharest.

French and Romanian data science communities are closely connected: many Romanian data scientists have studied or are working in France. Perhaps, this is the reason why this meetup felt like one big family!

To kick off the event Marie Sasksick from Paris chapter introduced the agenda and the chapter, which is the 3rd largest in the world, with over 4000 members.

This was followed by a presentation by Ines Teacă and Claudia Voicilă from Bucharest chapter, which is one of the youngest…

To continue our 2021 European tour, in March we had another joint meetup, this time with WiMLDS Dresden.

To kick off the event, Chloe-Agathe Azencott from Paris chapter introduced the agenda and the chapter, which is the 3rd largest in the world, with over 4000 members.

This was followed by a presentation by Shima Asaadi and Sarah Krebs from Dresden, who emphasized diverse and dedicated character of the Dresden chapter.

joint meetup Limassol & Paris WiMLDS

To begin 2021 with a bang, we had a new joint European meetup. After Berlin in April 2020, Milan in June 2020, and Brussels in September 2020, we partnered with the Limassol team (Cyprus) — Georgina Tryfou and Christina Orphanidou to organise a joint event in February 2021.

It was a roaring success, with over 80 people attending. (If you were not one of them, do not miss our next events!)

To kick off the event, Natalie Cernecka from Paris chapter introduced the agenda and the Paris chapter. She shared some lessons we’ve learnt building this chapter:

We have been missing those informal moments chatting with our members at the end of our physical meetups, and have decided to organise a Zoom Apero “Ask Us Anything” for our last meetup of 2020! We were very happy and surprised by your number of questions! Here are some, grouped by category, with our answers:

1 — Transition

How to do if you want to transition from tech to business?
When you go from one field to another, your network is paramount. List the persons you know, help yourself with your linkedin contacts, and ask them questions! …

Margrethe Vestager

After the launch of the season with an hors-serie, we keep going with a joint meetup with the Brussels team on Sept 25.

We were very proud to have Margrethe Vestager as unique speaker! Margrethe Vestager is Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for a Europe fit for the Digital Age.

We have been lucky to live stream our Zoom meeting to Youtube, therefore you have the chance to see it completely 👇

The theme of the meetup was: “Women in EU Technology and Data Policies”. Among the discussed topics, we have been lucky to listen why it is…

☀️ ️This is it, summer is finally over, we are starting to have meetups again!

On September 10th, we had an hors-série: the event was at the end of the day AI for Finance. Our members could get a ticket for free through our meetup page thanks to our special partnership with Société Générale.

📊 The event started with Margarita Khokhlova sharing one of her last articles: Cross-Year Multi-Modal Image Retrieval Using Siamese Networks.

It was very interesting to see how her model manages to group aerial pictures of the same place while taken up to 15 years…

On June, 25th 2020, we held our last online meetup of the season 2019–2020!

Chloé-Agathe Azencott moderated the event. Around fifty data science enthusiasts tuned in to listen to two presentations.

🎬 Unfortunately this time we couldn’t record the meetup… You can still have a look at our youtube channel to watch the previous ones!

📰 If you want to write a technical article, we would be glad to feature it on this very Medium page! Feel free to reach us in any of the channels described at the end of the article 📫.

On the 4th of June 2020, we held a joint online meetup with WiMLDS Milan.

This was our second meetup with another European chapter — we did a joint event with Berlin chapter in April — and we love the format! Since meetings in person are not possible nor safe yet, we are seizing the opportunity to build relations with fellow data enthusiasts in Europe.

This meetup was coorganised with Milan chapter, and we really enjoyed working together with Carlotta Orsenigo and Claudia Volpetti to make it happen.

Carlotta introduced Milan chapter and its history — it was founded in…

🌈 On May the 14th 2020, we organized a special online meetup 3 days prior to the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

This day aims to raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide.

⭐️ The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

This year’s theme is “Breaking the silence” : https://may17.org/

🌈 Being part of the LGBTQ+ community is knowing what it feels like to be part of an invisible minority.
